Big Kart New Beginnings

After brining it to the BD car show in 2022 and remembering what a blast it was to drive, I got interested in working on the Big Kart again.  It's getting new everything, starting with drive units based on the newer Ioniq hybrid HSG.  Real blog post when I've made more hardware progress, but for now enjoy this picture of some 3d-printed aluminum motor housings with internal water cooling channels. All the way on the left is the stock housing.

  1. Ok this is going to be awesome!! Did you use your BD printer as with the nylon parts you showed in earlier blog posts? Wishing great success with this and looking forward to the blog posts :)

    1. I actually got the parts printed through PCBWay, they now do machining and 3d printing as well as PCBs

  2. How did you get the pulley off the end of the shaft? I've tried to undo it to no avail, was it usual or left hand thread? Do you have a plan to make an adapter from the splines to a pulley or sprocket or such? Thanks!

    1. It's a right hand thread. Impact wrench on the nut. I've never been able to get them off without an impact

    2. Thanks! I noticed that it had moved ever so slightly so went full send with the impact, two and a half tanks of the conpressor later, it was free. I'm in the UK and it looks like the rotor is a 22mm shaft with 4mm woodruff key, no splines like the other photos you have posted. 2017 Kia Niro - 3739003900.

    3. The older Sonata motors also had woodruff keys, and were a little bit larger diameter than the Ioniq motors. What's the stator diameter on the ones you have, if you've taken it apart that far? The Ioniq's are 120mm, Sonata's around 130 if I remember correctly

    4. I'm not intending to take this one fully apart at this stage, but I'll let you know if I do. The main casting itself looks identical to your Ioniq one, so I'd suspect it's the same as that, but couldn't say for definite.
